We become united to Christ through baptism. There are two conditions for obtaining salvation: accepting to enter into a relationship with Jesus and being baptised. It is baptism that unites us to Christ, that places us 'in' Christ. Baptism also places us in the Church. We are so united to other believers that our lives are 'hidden' with Christ, in God. Christ and the church go together. The church will gladly offer you baptism and guide you in your relationship with Christ.
